Want to become a better or more consistent runner? Run slower.
Running isn’t easy but If you feel like every single run is the hardest workout you’ve ever done, it’s likely that you are pushing yourself too hard.
A slower pace allows your body to improve its aerobic energy system. This improves the body’s ability to produce energy and improve the efficiency of blood getting to your muscles.
There are times to run fast, but 80% of your weekly training runs should be slow.
Don’t believe me? Give it a try. On your next run, aim for a pace that is 2 to 4 minutes slower than your 5k pace. If you’re not sure what your 5k pace is, estimate based on your fastest mile within the last 6 months.
